An article printed in the Syndney Morning Herald in Australia by Julia Medew states that Acupuncture was found to be as effective as drugs for pain management.
In a trial conducted in four emergency rooms in Melbourne, acupuncture was just as good as pharmaceutical drugs for treating migraines, sprained ankles, and lower-back pain. These symptoms are just a sample of everything else that acupuncture can treat. The trial included hundreds of patients with either lower-back pain, migraines, or sprained ankles. Dr. Michael BenMeir, one of the researches, said he believe it showed that acupuncture delivered the same amount of pain management as drugs.
”Acupuncture was equivalent to what we defined as conventional medicine standard care, which was strong oral analgesia, such as Endone, Panadeine Forte, Voltaren and Valium,” he said.
The researcher also said that acupuncture is especially beneficial for patients who do not want to use drugs, including pregnant women, and for patients with pain that did not respond to Western medicine. The study also find that participants who received acupuncture left the hospital sooner. Acupuncture show a very low rate of side effects or adverse reactions.
Dr Ben-Meir added that while the exact means by which acupuncture is effective is not always clear, the same can be said for some Western medicines. He also said that drugs can cause side effects which acupuncture does not cause.
